A man by the name of Clark Christian Cameron Callahan was visiting the South Deep gold mine in Westonaria, Gauteng Province, South Africa while working on his doctorate in energy resources engineering. He was writing a paper on the feasibility of using heat from beneath the earths crust as an alternate form of energy when he discovered Arcanum. Arcanum was discovered at over 9000 feet (1.7 miles) below the earths surface and was a byproduct of the pressures of deep mining and the artificial cooling process used to keep the mines at a workable temperature. After Dr. Callahan received his doctorate he started focusing all his attention on Arcanum but his research was never taken seriously as the material was regarded as nothing more than detritus from the mining process and had no value. During a presentation to his peers Dr. Callahan attempted to show his colleagues how Arcanum would become a beneficial alternate energy when his prototype caught fire and nearly burned down the auditorium. After this Dr. Callahan refined his work and again attempted to present his findings to his peers. He was never able to finish his presentation as he was laughed at and openly belittled by nearly everyone in the room. Everyone except Dr. Mitchell Scott who had been following Dr. Callahan's work.
After the disastrous presentation and subsequent withdrawal of funding, Dr. Callahan vowed to give up on Arcanum altogether and try to rebuild his reputation as best he could. Dr. Scott approached Dr. Callahan a few days after his final presentation on Arcanum and tried to convince him to come work for him. Initially Dr. Callahan refused but Mitchell started coordinating the removal and shipment of Arcanum to the states from the South Deep mine in Africa anyway. Though mildly rare, the mine company gladly gave Dr. Scott all the Arcanum he wanted as it was seen as an item of cost and not profitable.
After Dr. Scott had a small stockpile of Arcanum and a working lab fully devoted to the research and refinement of the material he again contacted Dr. Callahan and was able to arrange a meeting though Dr. Scott didn't mention his work on Arcanum. The two met at Dr. Scott's Arcanum lab and after Dr. Scott showed him what he was doing and the progress he was making with Dr. Callahan's initial research he finally gave in and agreed to work lead on the project. With Dr. Callahan's help it was quickly realized that Arcanum was viable as an alternate form of energy. Research would have continued but the outbreak hit and the lab had to be shut down. The Arcanum power cells were only small working prototypes at the time.
Dr. Scott's SkyMedix division was tasked with delivering the antivirus but he needed a longer term source of energy. With Dr. Callahan's help his team was able to quickly adapt the Arcanum technology to SkyMedix delivery drones and production on the downsized "prototype" Arcanum cells was quickly ramped up. After the outbreak Dr. Callahan started calling himself 4C in an attempt to hide from those who blamed SkyMedix for the outbreak while at the same time attempting to build a larger, full size, Arcanum cell which would use a few hundred Arc Pellets and power his portion of the grid keeping SkyMedix up and running for many years to come.
This got a whole lot longer than I intended but I think it ties in nicely with the current story.
